Dr. Neil Hair

The Musings Of A Professor Of Marketing.

Feedback on my site

You blink and it's gone. It's almost a year since I updated http://www.neilhair.com/ to web version 2.0. and it's time to review its performance. I'm looking for ideas and feedback on what you like and what might be improved. I designed my site with usability in mind, my audience is primarily three fold as I see it, family and friends, students and alum (who kind of blend into the friends category). I have several auditing questions I'd like to ask you.

1. What's missing?
2. What do you like?
3. What can I do more of?
3. Who would you consider to be benchmarks? (ie identify similar sites that might offer me additional ideas)
4. Any other misc. ideas that might be fun to incorporate.

Several things you’ve done very well and areas you might consider for improvement, with improvement first:

    1) Include a “home” button at the top to enable return from any page.

    2) On the right-side tabs, place categories as second from the top, meta third, and then archives on the bottom.

3)You might consider changing your picture up top to one in which your face can be clearly seen, you’re smiling and indicative of friendliness, and there is a background in the picture (demonstrative of your usual professional surroundings). Avoid the overconservative suit, shirt, and tie, but still dress in a professional manner. You might consider a picture of yourself in front of a class, with some kind of motion in progress and animation in your face. This will tell your visitors who you are, what you do, and that you can be both friendly and professional.

    4) This is more strategy than the website itself, but sign up for an AOL Instant Messenger Account. I know MSN is much cleaner and more professional, but AIM is what a major segment of your readership uses. A link from your AIM profile to your site, coupled with a “last updated” note in your profile is yet another way to allow easy access and repeat exposure.

    Excellent Job at:
    1) Very clean and professional, not cluttered

    2) Logical, easy to navigate

    3) Strong Evidence of research of similar sites to assure up-to-datedness

    4) Regular usage of a variety of media and content demonstrative of technological expertise.

thanks chris - some good ideas and useful reflection. The picture has bothered some, and is loved by others. I might try to introduce a revolving picture that changes each time the site loads.

I like it. Nice blend of personality and industry commentary.

One complaint…a couple weeks ago you said that you have an Erasure cover video on YouTube and I COULDN’T FIND IT!!! Not nice.

Benchmarks? Seth Godin is my favorite guru blog.
